I’ve spent years studying rhythms from around the world—Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern, African, Indian, Latin American—by learning these world rhythms that have been distilled down to perfection over thousands of years, I have learned what makes a rhythm tick! What Makes This System Different? This is not a book filled with page after page of notated patterns, it does have notation, but it's mainly a single theory on how to conceptualize rhythm. Using an important element that's missing from the traditional rudiments, we create the “DNA” of the primordial patterns, a rhythmic sequence, or Yin & Yang of rhythm . By moving this “DNA” sequence to different positions in the bar, we cover all the rhythmic possibilities of a particular time signature in a very musical way! It starts by introducing a series of hand patterns. Each hand pattern has a “built in” kick drum part for the drum set, making these patterns a unique way to build 3 and 4 way coordination, while also gaining a greater understanding of rhythmic possibilities. Even without knowledge of music notation anyone can learn the primordial patterns with the simple right and left hand patterns.
